About Me
I am so happy to be a
part of the Horace Mann family this year! It’s great to work where
there is such a wonderful program with wonderful students, families
and staff! The dual language program is why I have wanted to come
to work here. The pursuit of knowledge and understanding the world
we live in has always been very important to me, and that desire to
learn and make this world a better place is what I hope to impart to
my students.
My interest in other cultures began in childhood.
Although I was born and raised in rural southeastern Kansas, I have
always been interested in learning about other people and places. I
studied Spanish in high school and college. I spent a little over a
year in Venezuela after graduating from Pittsburg State University.
My first teaching job was in Garden City. I taught ESL there for
three years, working mostly with Southeast Asian students from
Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. I taught all grade levels 1st
through high school age, and even adults. I then moved to Wichita,
where I taught ESOL at Park Elementary until coming here this year.
During that time, I returned to college at WSU to earn a Masters in
Spanish. It was hard work, and when I finally finished, I thought I
would be happy never to take another class again. That didn’t last
long, though. I love learning and have taken many more classes and
watched a lot of documentaries to learn more about the world.
Movies and traveling are some of my favorite pastimes. I have been
to many states and countries, including Israel, Russia, and Mexico.
My favorite area of the U.S. is the Desert Southwest. I have plans
to visit Spain this Christmas!
I am married to Tim, who works in finance at Spirit
Aerosystems. He has a passion for astronomy. My son, Taylor, is 15
years old and plays soccer for the Derby Panthers. Two of my
step-kids are in college. Zac is studying international business at
WSU, except this year, he is in an exchange program in Spain
J.
Erin Ashley is at Arizona State University in Tucson studying
cellular biology. My step-daughter, Evelyn, works for the federal
court system. She enjoys cooking and wild rides, like sky diving
and white-water rafting. Life is good! |
