Four
schools receive awards from Crime Stoppers
Four middle schools received monetary awards for their successful
Crime Stoppers in Schools programs. Brooks, Horace Mann, Blackbear
Bosin Academy and Stucky Middle Schools were honored on Oct. 4. This
is the first time the Wichita/Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers has
recognized the top performers in the Crime Stoppers program.
Students, schools staff and members of the Crime Stoppers board were
present at the award ceremony.
“This
initiative to keep our schools safe is very important,” said Galen
Davis, Director of Safety Services.
“You have
worked hard, dealt with more issues and solved more problems,”
David Haglund, President of the Wichita/Sedgwick County Crime
Stoppers board, told the students at the ceremony. “You are models
for the rest of the schools.”
Stucky was the
fourth-highest performer and received $100 for its program.
Blackbear Bosin Academy was the third-highest and received $200.
Horace Mann received $300 for second place and Brooks was the top
performer and received $400. The schools were selected based on the
reports submitted to Crime Stoppers, the ability of schools to
address those concerns and the rate of solving the problems.
The schools
have solved at least 50-percent of the crime problems that were
brought forward last year. Representatives from the Wichita Police
Department noted that is a very high success rate.
The Crime
Stoppers in Schools program was started in 1992 and involves 30
Wichita, Sedgwick County and parochial schools. Students can
anonymously report any crimes that have happened or may happen in
their schools or in their neighborhoods. If a crime is solved, the
student or students can receive a reward.
