Horace Mann NewsBrief!

October is here!  Can you believe that we are already finishing up our first nine week period?  Students have been doing so many things--we invite you to attend our Parent/Teacher Conferences to learn more the week of October 14-17.  We’re going for 100% conferences so please plan ahead!

Congratulations, students and teachers, Horace Mann passed the state reading and math testing for the third year in a row!  We raised our reading (84% passing) and math (86% passing) scores school wide!  Way to go, Horace Mann!

Elementary and middle school students are starting their field trips this month.  Teachers have been planning field trips that will promote student learning and increase their understanding of the world around them.  We live in a culturally diverse community with so many places to visit at each grade level.

Parking Reminder:  The yellow, no parking zone is from 7:30-8 a.m. and 3:00-3:30 p.m.  During this time, it is for loading and unloading only.  Please do not leave your car parked in this area or it may get a ticket.

Music does help our student get involved and broadens our minds.  Please join us Thursday evening, October 2, at 7 p.m. for the 5th Grade Orchestra/6th Grade Band program and on Tuesday evening, October 7, at 7 p.m. for the MS Fall Orchestra/Band/Choir Concert.

There will be No School Friday and Monday, October 10 and 13, due to Teacher Work and Inservice Days.  Teachers will be preparing grade cards to hand out at our Parent/Teacher Conferences the next week.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are set for Tuesday through Friday, October 14-17.  School will dismiss early on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday that week at 12:30 p.m. (busses run early).  Please plan to attend to support your student and learn more about what is happening here at Horace Mann!

Red Ribbon Week is October 20-24.  Students will be having special activities this week to promote the drug awareness.  We believe in promoting healthy lifestyles and getting involved in positive lifestyles!

Picture Day is coming up on Wednesday, October 22.  Dress your best and look sharp!  We have great looking students at Horace Mann with lots of nice smiles!

Our Book Character Day (Halloween) for grades K-5 is set for Friday, October 31.  That week, students will be focusing on fables and fairy tales in reading.  Students can come to school dressed as their favorite book character (no masks or play weapons).  Parties will start at 2:30 p.m. and parents are welcome to bring treats and help set up for their homerooms!  We will also have a K-5 Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) distribution to celebrate reading!

Remember to register to VOTE on November 4.  The school BOND is part of the election this year.  If passed, Horace Mann would receive a new middle school gym plus four classrooms!

Our middle school students are finishing up their Cross Country the first week of October.  They are going to be starting girl’s volleyball and boy’s soccer tryouts the first week of October.  National Academic League is continuing to practice after school.  Student Council has elected their new officers for the year and is planning special activities for the year.  So many things to do—we invite all of our students to get involved!  Our first Middle School Dance is set for October 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.!
