Activities
Horace Mann's K-8 academic program
provides students an enriching environment that goes beyond the
reading and math basics. Teachers work with students daily to
meet their individual learning needs. In addition, they
provide intervention and/or enrichment each week through FLEX in
reading and math.
Horace Mann Student Council (StuCo):
The
Student Council at Horace Mann is made up of 2 subgroups. The
Elementary StuCo consists of students from grades 3-5 while Middle
School Stuco is made up of 6-8th graders.
Elementary:
The YMCA Splash Program is a special 6 week program that is
geared toward 2nd graders and occurs during school hours.
The goal of this program is to teach students how to swim and be
safe near water. All 2nd graders participate unless they
choose to opt out.
The YMCA S.T.A.R.S Program allows all elementary
students 1st - 5th grade. S.T.A.R.S. or
(Students Together After-School for Recreation and Sports) is a free
program that brings students to the Central YMCA for physical
activity in the gym and pool, after school every Tuesday. Students
who choose to participate are picked up at Horace Mann immediately
after school by the YMCA bus at 4:10 and return to Horace Mann by
5:45 p.m. Due to space limitations and the popularity of this
program, students alternate in attendance biweekly.
Latchkey: offers a state certified
child care service before school from 6:30-8:50 a.m. and after
school from 4:10-6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria and gym where students
play and do special projects.
Middle School:

Sports:
At Horace Mann
competitive sports are available for qualifying 7th and 8th
graders. Sports offered at Horace Mann include: cross-country,
girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, and track & field.
In division 2, Horace Mann competes against the following middle
schools:
Allison Traditional Magnet, Blackbear Bosin Academy, Coleman,
Hamilton, John Marshall, Mayberry Cultural & Fine Arts Magnet, Mead,
and Pleasant Valley.
To participate,
all students must have a completed physical form on record. Horace
Mann with the help of KU Medical Center will be giving all current 6th
and 7th graders free physicals on Monday, May 5th
from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. during school hours. Also in order to
participate, students must adhere to the D/F policy while on the
team, are expected to come dressed and ready to practice regularly
at scheduled practices, show positive attitudes, and have fun!
Tryouts & Practice:
Both girls and boys can participate in Cross country. Tryouts are
not conducted. Anyone interested can join the team. This sport
begins immediately in August. Practices are held daily from 4:10 –

Volleyball is offered for girls only. In order to be on the team
interested girls must tryout. Tryouts take place in early October.
Practice occurs daily from 4:10 to 5:30 Monday – Friday. For more
information, contact coaches Kyle Hall and Bobbie Jo Rohloff.
Basketball is offered for both girls & boys. Students interested in
participating must tryout. Tryouts for basketball are held in early
December. Practice begins in January and is held immediately after
school Monday – Friday from 4:10 – 5:30. For more information,
contact coach Casey Cottrill (girls); and coach Michael Ghram
(boys).
Both girls and boys can participate in Track & Field. Tryouts are
not conducted for participation. Anyone interested can join the
team. The season and practice begins in early March. Practices are
held daily Monday – Friday immediately after school from 4:10 –

National Academic League (NAL)
Horace Mann competed in the National Academic
League for the first time in 2005-06 and finished with a winning 7-4
record.
The YMCA After School Program is exclusively for middle
schoolers (6th -8th graders) and provides a
free snack, enrichment activities in the core academic subjects, as
well as individualized tutoring for the first 45 minutes followed by
intramurals to support middle school athletics. The program begins
immediately after school and ends daily by 6:00 p.m. Monday –
Thursday. Each Wednesday is field trip day. On field trip day,
students are transported to various locations around Wichita that
promote physical fitness or enrichment activities in fine arts. Such
locations include: Seneca Bowl, Ice Sports Wichita, City Arts, West
YMCA and Riverside Park. Transportation and admission are paid for
by the YMCA and students only need to fill out an application to
join. *Students in detention or tutoring may join in to intramurals
at 5:00 p.m. on any given day. Daily attendance is encouraged.

Student Tech
Leaders learn more about technology and how to help support
classroom teachers and other students. Check out what we're

Web Site: The Web Site allows us to share our exciting
school program and what we are doing with others.
TV News Broadcasting: Selected
8th grade students meet daily in their Communication's Class to
create the weekly Friday morning Horace Mann TV News Broadcast.
All School:
Folkloric Dancing: Hispanic cultural events are
encouraged Folkloric Dancing.
These students frequently perform at many school and
Wichita events.
Reading Counts: The Reading Counts program
is a computerized reading program that tests students' reading and
comprehension levels. Students read books for points and then
can turn in their points for prizes to encourage reading for fun.
Reading Is Fundamental (RIF): RIF programs are set up
three times a year for students to go to the library, participate in a fun and
educational learning activity, and then choose a free book to take home and
keep.
Breakfast and Lunch Program: Horace Mann offers a
complete breakfast (from 8:30-9 a.m.) and lunch programs for our students.
Many of our students qualify for the free or reduced food program.
Bussing: As a magnet school, Horace Mann
provides transportation services for our students living over 2 and
1/2 miles from school. We currently have 20 busses assigned to
us and transport from all over the city of Wichita.
Horace Mann Hawk Award: Students who
do something special (helping someone, working hard, showing
respect, doing what is right, etc.) can receive a 'Horace Mann Hawk
Coupon' to put into a weekly drawing to become the student of the
week.
Adult School Groups and Organizations:
Parent Teacher Organization: Horace Mann parents get
involved in many ways through the PTO, as room parents, with tutoring/helping in
the classroom, and at home with their own children with homework and special
projects.
Site Council: The Horace Mann Site Council meets one
Thursday a month to discuss school topics, look for ways to help student
improvement and share ideas so we can build a better school.
