At Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet, students begin their bilingual journey from the very first day of school. Whether students enter with English as their primary language or with a Spanish language background, they immediately begin developing both English and Spanish through daily instruction, meaningful interaction, and active participation in learning.
Beginning in kindergarten, students learn to listen, speak, read, and write in both languages. They build foundational literacy skills, develop vocabulary, and grow in confidence as they use English and Spanish to communicate, collaborate, problem-solve, and express their thinking. Students are excited by the challenge of learning in two languages, and they quickly discover that bilingualism is a strength they can use every day.

Growing as Bilingual and Biliterate Learners
As students move through the elementary years, their language and literacy skills continue to grow. The vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills developed in the early grades become the foundation for deeper academic learning. Over time, students become more confident using both languages to show what they know, make connections across content areas, and participate fully as bilingual and biliterate learners.

As students enter intermediate and middle school grades, they continue strengthening their academic language, independence, and leadership. Because Horace Mann is a K–8 school, students remain connected to a familiar and supportive community during important years of growth. Middle school students build on the relationships and routines established in elementary school while also becoming leaders, role models, and mentors for younger students.
